The Bell Corporation P39 Airacobra was designed around a Chrysler cannon firing
through the propeller shaft. To make the arrangement work the engine was placed
behind the pilot and used an extension shaft to reach the prop.
The P39 was most used by the Armies of Russia who found favor with its big tank
busting gun. Over 5,000 were provided to the USSR by the United States on the lend
lease program in World War II.
I first saw Lee Liddle fly his P39 SSC warbird at the Dixie Nationals and knew I had to
have one. Lee's P39 uses the same wing as his Open SSC "SMACK", has a 2" thick
foam fuselage and features some interesting design and construction techniques to make it
quick to build.
The finished weight with full size servos, 800Mah pack, Hitec 555 receiver is 2 lbs 12
ounces. The time to build this plane and the JKA SSC P51 which was built at the same
time was 10 days.
The bare foam fuse is first covered with bidirectional strapping tape then covered with
colored packing tape. I used orange to duplicate the scheme used by Tony LaVier on his
past war racer.
More to come.....
