Part II of SSC Cobra Construction, assembling the wing, installing
servos, adding armor... March 31st, 2004.
The two photos of the SS Cobra sitting on my garage
floor show how it looks after Part II.  The final
installation of the tail, engine and radio is next.
A blue foam rear half of the wing core is  shown here being prepared for
assembly.  The servo pockets are routed out, the receiver and battery
compartment routed and the bladder compartment are all doen before
the wing cores are assembled.  I have cardboard templpates of all the
parts to make the job of laying them out go quickly.
All four foam wing components have to be notched at the center to
clear the spar doublers.  This is an easy task on a bandsaw.
The blue wing cores have been glued to the basswood spar.  The glue
used was Pica Gluit 2it Aliphatic white glue which is very strong, fast
drying and easy to sand.  Masking tape holds everything together at
this point.
In this photo the EPP leading edge foam has been attached with Contact
Cement (it will not attack EPP), the bidirectional armor has been added
in several locations and the aileron servos glued in place.  Click on the
photo to see the building notes that explain these processes.
Here the tail parts have been cut out.  The stab also has two dowels
running through its flues to stiffen it up.  The rudder is marked for where
it will mate to the stab/elevator assembly.
I used barbed plastic auto panel fasterners to join the fins to the stab.  I
got them in the nuts and bolts section of the local Ace Hardware for .29
apiece.  They work very well and are further held in place with
Household Goop.
Here is the completed tail assembly ready to be mated to the wing.
